Award-winning novelist Martha Southgate (who, in the words of Julia Glass, "can write fast and hot, then lush and tender, then just plain truthful and burning with heart") tells the moving story of a family tested to the limits by an unending cycle of addiction over the course of two generations. In her new novel The Taste of Salt (September, 2011) Southgate perfectly captures the struggles of living with alcoholic family members.

The Henderson family is caught in a cycle of alcoholism. Despite desperate attempts to escape their roots, Southgate's characters come to discover that no matter how hard one may run, one's fate is unavoidable. Josie Henderson is an ocean lover who is deeply fulfilled by her position as the only senior-level black scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. But in building this impressive life for herself, she has tried to shed the one thing she cannot: her family back in landlocked Cleveland. When Tick, her adored brother and childhood ally against their alcoholic father, arrives on her doorstep with his own addiction, Josie must face both her family's secrets and her own fate.

Weaving four voices into a beautiful tapestry, Southgate charts the lives of the Hendersons from the parents' first charmed meeting to Josie's final realization that the ways of the human heart are more complex than anything you can see under a microscope.

Martha Southgate is the author of two acclaimed novels, The Fall of Rome and Third Girl from the Left and other works that have been widely anthologized. She has worked for numerous publications, including Essence, Premiere, the New York Daily News, and the New York Times. A graduate of Smith College, she has an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard, and has taught at Brooklyn College and The New School.
